Guidelines for ReadersOur participatory worship
service is an important part of our parish life. The Worship Committee
offers these suggestions in the hope that your contribution will be
meaningful to you and to those in the congregation.
- When you are speaking or reading, please speak slowly and clearly,
and direct your voice straight to the mike. This type does not pick up
sounds from the side- only straight on. Even with the mike, you need to
project your voice to the back pews.
- Read or speak with feeling appropriate to the material you are
presenting. You will need to study the material before the service so
you understand the style and message, and practice it aloud.
- The Common Lectionary has been revised. Therefore, some of the
lessons are not in the current Inclusive Language Lectionary. If your
lesson is not in the Inclusive Language Lectionary, you will need to use
your own Bible. Please try to make the reading inclusive in its
language. There will be a Bible and the Inclusive Language Lectionary on
the pulpit with the lessons marked for your page. Leave the bookmark in
place for the next reader.
- There is no need to announce the chapter and verse if they are
printed in the bulletin.
- Readers of the Hebrew Lesson: Introduce your reading with something
like "Hear the Word of God as found in the book of the prophet
Jeremiah." At the end of your reading, say "Here ends the reading of the
Hebrew lesson."
- > Reader of the New Testament: Introduce your lesson with
something like "This is the Word of God as found in the Gospel according
to Luke" or "...in the letter of Paul to the Romans." At the end of the
reading also say," Here ends the reading from ______."
