Sample Liturgy

For people who are new to Dumbarton, we want to provide a taste of what our liturgies at DUMC are like.

This was for service on January 27, 2002.

"The Song of the Disordered"

GATHERING

Calling Us to Worship

Come, people of God, and let the light of God shine upon you. Come, O Light of the World, and shine on each one gathered here. Come to our city, our nation, our world, to still the quarrels and open our hearts. Come. . . come . . . come.

Music for Meditation

*Greeting (*Please stand as you are able) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived in a land of deep darkness - on them a light has shined. Let the light shine through you, let it shine!

*Hymn 585 "This Little Light of Mine"

CONFESSION AND PARDON
John the Baptist's message was Repent, for God's realm has come near. We, too, are called to repent. Let us offer our confession. O God of Change, too long we have been hiding in the shadows, reluctant to express our faith. Too long we have shunned the light, afraid of what might be exposed. Too long we have avoided people with whom we have a quarrel, refusing to build bridges across our differences. We pray for your healing love in our lives.
(Silent Prayers of Confession)

Hymn 348 "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" (Vs. 1 & 4)
Softly and tenderly we are called, forgiven, and loved. Brothers and sisters that message is for you. It is God's gift! The Peace of God be with you, and also with you!

*Passing of the Peace

RESPONSES AND COMMITMENT
Sharing of Joys and Concerns
Prayers of the Faithful
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father/Mother God, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive
those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering
What can we do to proclaim the gospel? One way is through sharing the gifts God has given us: our time, talent, and treasurer. Let us give with joy.
Offertory
Offertory Prayer
Let us pray. O Generous God, as we offer these gifts, we pray that we may follow your call and make an offering of ourselves, not just our money. And so we dedicate this offering and our lives. Amen.

Opportunities for Mission and Ministry

*Hymn 344 "Tu Has Venido a la Orilla" (Sing in Spanish or English)

SENDING FORTH
People of light, turn to face a new week. People of joy, go forth empowered. People of God, you are sent for in the power of God's love, live it boldly! Amen!
