Sunday Morning Coffee Hour

Dumbarton's coffee hour is a time for people in the church to renew friendships, meet visitors and nourish their bodies.  Members of the congregation provide food and drink on a rotating basis.

Members of the congregation unable to serve on the day assigned, should arrange to trade with someone else, person for person.  Typically, four people (three in summer) provide food and clean-up for each coffee hour.  If a person is unable to trade, or does not wish to serve coffee hour at all, or is interested in helping but is not on the list, please call Jody McPherson.  Prior to that Sunday, servers should contact the other people also assigned to that coffee hour to confirm participation and decide what each person will bring.

The general responsibilities are to provide food and drink for the adults and children, to set up, serve, and clean the Social Hall after coffee hour.

Children's food and drink should be set out before the service starts.  We need to provide for about 20 small children such nonsweet items as peanut butter sandwiches cut in quarters, cream cheese on crackers, granola bars and/or some of the more healthy foods provided for the adults.  Remember that laughing children can choke on popcorn and peanuts.

Food for adults and older children should be set out just before the service ends.  What is served is up to the servers; whatever is pout out will be gladly consumed.  Frequently served items include vegetables and/or chips and dips, cheese and crackers, breads, cakes, cookies and fruit.  Please try to have at least one nonsweet item. Serve only what you can afford to provide in time and funds--the fellowship is what is important.

Coffee, tea and other beverages should also be served.  In hot weather, most adults prefer a cold drink.

How to:

  • Coffee - The church has 2 60-cup coffeepots and some smaller ones.  In cold weather, at least one large pot of coffee is needed.  The 60- cup pots each take 1 pound of coffee with water up to the 60-cup mark.

  • Tea - The 60-cup coffeepot that has no apparatus inside can be used to heat water.  Set out about 50 tea bags.

  • Cream, sugar, and low-calorie sweetener - These need to be provided by the servers and leftovers must be taken home.  A large pot of coffee requires a quart of cream, half-and-half, or milk.

Supplies:

  • Mugs and paper products - Servers need to provide napkins and plates, as required.  The church's mugs or glasses may be rolled out into the Social Hall in their rack/cart.  When done, cups and glasses should be washed in the dishwasher.  This machine may be left running when you leave.

  • Tablecloths - These are in the kitchen.  These may be used for the serving tables.  They need to be clean and dry before being returned to storage.

Cleanup is vitally important.  The floor should be swept, tables wiped and returned to where they were, and the garbage tied up and taken out back, behind the church.  Put glass and plastic bottles in the recycle bin in
the kitchen.

Lockup is also critical.  If none of the servers has a key, make sure that someone who does have a key locks the front door before leaving.  The door can be opened from the inside after it is locked with a key.  Check windows in the Sunday schools rooms and doors, including both doors to the playground and the one near the elevator, to ensure they are shut and locked.

Many people standing in the social hall while eating and drinking. Following worship service church goers gather in the social hall downstairs to talk and have light refreshments.
